I live in Torrance California and I have a roommate that I need to get rid of. My roommate is not on the lease and has been there for less than two months. My roommate who is 19 is my ex-boyfriends niece. I was originally told that her mother had abandoned her and her other siblings and was being evicted from their home due to foreclosure. So I offered to move from my 1 bedroom apartment to a two bedroom in the same building to help her out. But I made it very clear that none of her other family members where to stay with us or even know where we live since many of them are bad news. My boyfriend pays her rent of $200 while I pay $900. Well my roommate now has her mother staying here on my couch, her younger brother as well has started staying here, all of her family members who are and are not staying here now have had their mail forwarded to my apartment, my roommate has even given everyone a key! I have had money come up missing. My apartment is always a mess, my utilities have more that tripled, my neighbors have complained, and once while I was out of town my roommate threw a party and l almost got me evicted. The list goes on and on. I have been here for almost two years without any problems and I am extremely embarrassed. I want to stay here and just have her and everyone out. Can I legally change the locks and kick everyone out or do I have to give anyone any kind of a notice? I am the only one on the lease or on any of the bills. But my roommates uncle (my ex) has paid for her rent of $200 for this month. My landlord gave me the ok to have the locks changed as long as I give her a copy. Can I change the locks and not give her a key and just allow her in to stay for the rest of the month. What can i do about the rest of the family members that have decided to stay here as well? Help I am miserable! I agreed to the $200 because I was trying to help somone out so that she could get on her feet and get going with her life. But instead I have been taken advantage of and feel miserable. I am planning on going to the police to talk to them about this and get their take on it to make sure I'm clear on my rights. I will post what they have said.... Read More »
